How much can we say with one gesture?

Over two days, we'll begin with the language of the ruffle—learning how simple, repeatable gestures can accumulate into complexity—then allow that language to move into the body of the cake through intuitive sculpting and how to conceive of the liquid grid. We'll explore what happens when a surface begins to bend, swell, gather, and gesture, rather than simply sit on top of a form.

As we work, we'll use each other's cakes as mirrors: noticing how differently we respond to the same materials, constraints, and possibilities. Those differences become a way of seeing our own instincts more clearly.

Alongside the making, guided Theory of Practice exercises and worksheets help us identify the choices and tendencies emerging through our work. We'll distill those discoveries into a “MY THEORY OF PRACTICE / Personal Recipe Card”, a practical framework for carrying our creative instincts into future creative work, client relationships, and even our businesses.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

TECHNIQUE - Deep instruction in a distinctive cake-making technique, with demonstration, guided practice, experimentation, and individual feedback.

THEORY OF PRACTICE - Throughout the workshop, students begin uncovering their own Theory of Practice: the beliefs, instincts, preferences, and working principles that shape their creative decisions.

CREATIVE APPLICATION - Students move beyond reproducing a demonstration and use the technique as a starting point for developing their own visual language.

BUSINESS APPLICATION - Students consider how their Theory of Practice can inform not only what they make, but how they work—from client relationships and creative decision-making to the way they structure and operate their businesses.

PLACES TO STAY

Wyndham Garden and Weber's are hotels that are both really close to here if you are looking for something easily drivable. (Or walkable if you don't mind chilly weather) You would probably want to get a ride back to your hotel once you have your finished cakes, though.

If you'd rather stay downtown, the Graduate and AC Hotel are right in the middle of town and walking distance to lots of restaurants/shops.

If you'd prefer an AirBnB, I know the host of this one and this one is very close to the Cake Studio.

Ann Arbor is very safe in general so you can't go wrong with places to stay. If you're looking to make a trip of it, check out my friend Sue's guide to Ann Arbor.

The best airport to fly into is Detroit (DTW).
