An academic entry into Play
In collaboration with Cake Circle....
EXPLORE The day starts with a 40-minute Cake Study session led by Cake Circle’s in house Cakeology professor, Azara K., followed by guided creative exercises with Jasmine that turn ideas into material exploration. No one knows yet what you will make.
THE INVESTIGATION What happens when we enter creative practice through study rather than technique? How can looking closely, thinking together, and asking better questions open new possibilities in our making?
PLAY Students use the Cake Study, along with the exploratory exercises, as a springboard for constrained creative expression—observing, interpreting, experimenting, and making, without the pressure of a client brief or predetermined outcome. I love this day because we’ll watch ourselves surprise ourselves.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
TECHNIQUE - Deep instruction in a distinctive cake-making technique, with demonstration, guided practice, experimentation, and individual feedback.
THEORY OF PRACTICE - Throughout the workshop, students begin uncovering their own Theory of Practice: the beliefs, instincts, preferences, and working principles that shape their creative decisions.
CREATIVE APPLICATION - Students move beyond reproducing a demonstration and use the technique as a starting point for developing their own visual language.
BUSINESS APPLICATION - Students consider how their Theory of Practice can inform not only what they make, but how they work—from client relationships and creative decision-making to the way they structure and operate their businesses.

PLACES TO STAY
Wyndham Garden and Weber's are hotels that are both really close to here if you are looking for something easily drivable. (Or walkable if you don't mind chilly weather) You would probably want to get a ride back to your hotel once you have your finished cakes, though.
If you'd rather stay downtown, the Graduate and AC Hotel are right in the middle of town and walking distance to lots of restaurants/shops.
If you'd prefer an AirBnB, I know the host of this one and this one is very close to the Cake Studio.
Ann Arbor is very safe in general so you can't go wrong with places to stay. If you're looking to make a trip of it, check out my friend Sue's guide to Ann Arbor.
The best airport to fly into is Detroit (DTW).
Additional Details
All materials needed for the workshop will be provided for in class use.
We will provide boxes for transport of the dummy cakes that students create during the workshop. We will also provide an option to transport the flowers only if you’d prefer.
This workshop is subject to cancellation if the minimum capacity is not met. If the workshop is canceled, students will receive a full refund.
Cancellation Policy: We are happy to offer a full refund for cancellations up to six weeks before the date of the workshop. After that, until one month before the workshop, we can offer a credit towards another workshop. We do not offer a refund or a credit for workshops canceled with less than one month’s notice, but you are welcome to send another participant in your stead. Please be aware that this policy applies to all cancellations.
If you select a payment plan and do not make your final payment by 1 month before the workshop, you will sacrifice your first payment unless we are able to sell your seat to another student.
